Environmental Product Declarations
Our electricity generation - Power station Environmental Product Declarations
We care about the operating safely and protecting the environment. To best understand the power we produce and its environmental impact we commissioned a series of life cycle assessment studies that describe the environmental impacts of a product from ‘cradle to grave’. The assessments cover the entire fuel cycle and included nuclear waste, spent fuel and CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions. These are available for you to download from this website in the form of Environmental Product Declarations
Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) concept
EPDs have been established as a prime vehicle for industry in the communication of environmental impacts to professional procurers and interested parties. The environmental parameters captured in the EPD are summarised in below.
Implications for new nuclear build
British Energy is taking forward plans for new nuclear power stations in the UK. These will most probably be of an evolutionary design similar to Sizewell B. A new generation of nuclear power stations is likely to be more compact in design and would therefore have a life cycle emissions of the same order or less than
Sizewell B.
Lifecycle emissions information for other forms of power generation technology
The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology has produced a comprehensive note on life cycle emissions of CO2 from other forms of power generation technology. This can be read here.
