BTO British Energy Business Bird Challenge 2010

A celebration of the partnership between business and the environment

Throughout 2010 EDF Energy is pleased to be sponsoring the BTO’s Business Bird Challenge, a competition to find the country’s best industrial and commercial sites for birds. It provides an opportunity for businesses to publicise their conservation initiatives, promote their partnerships with local communities and to benchmark their activities against those of other companies.

The BTO British Energy Business Bird Challenge was officially launched by the Right Honourable Elliot Morley (MP and BTO Vice President) in November 2009 at our Hartlepool Power Station.

Both EDF Energy and British Energy have taken part in the biennial competition for many years. In 2008 British Energy won three awards in the Industry and Power categories: Heysham and Dungeness were jointly awarded the Birds category with 160 bird species recorded, Sizewell B and Heysham were given Conservation awards for their long standing partnerships with the local Wildlife Trusts.

Already some of our power station sites have got off to a flying start. At the end of the first quarter Sizewell B had recorded 89 bird species using the site including sightings of both merlin and little egret. Hartlepool recorded 49 species including our regular short eared owl as well as a new record for the site, a water rail.

We are delighted to be furthering our involvement with the BTO by sponsoring the Challenge throughout 2010. The BTO is the UK’s leading bird research organisation. It is a unique partnership of over 30,000 volunteer birdwatchers and scientific staff.

We hope that in the United Nations’ International Year of Biodiversity, businesses can demonstrate a real commitment to conserving our special wildlife for the benefit and enjoyment of the local communities in which we work.
