Dr Andy Spurr Managing Director, Existing Nuclear
Has been in the industry since 1975. He started his career at the Marchwood Engineering Laboratories, working on various mechanical engineering issues, before transferring to Barnwood where he worked in the generation design and construction division. He moved to Hartlepool as engineering manager before taking the position of station manager at Dungeness A in 1994. He returned to British Energy to head the B station in 1996. From 2001 through 2005 he undertook executive director roles in engineering and operations before being appointed deputy Chief Nuclear Officer in 2006. In November 2006 he was appointed as Chief Technical Officer and in July 2009 he was appointed Managing Director, Existing Nuclear. Dr Spurr is a fellow of the Institution of Nuclear Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Mark Gorry Safety & Technical Director, Existing Nuclear
Joined the CEGB in 1975 as a technician apprentice and graduated in 1981 from the University of Aston under the professional engineer training scheme (honours degree). Mark worked in various operations and engineering positions at Heysham 1, Wylfa, and Heysham 2 power stations. Mark became human resources manager in 1995, then technical and safety manager and later engineering manager in 1997. Since 2001 he has been Station Director of Dungeness B, Sizewell B, Heysham 1, Heysham 2 and Hunterston B power stations. He was appointed Safety & Technical Director on 10 July 2009. Mark holds an honours degree in Energy Technology (Power Engineering), an MBA, and is a Chartered Engineer. He is a Fellow of both the Institution of Engineering & Technology and the Institution of Nuclear Engineers.
Brian Cowell Chief Nuclear Officer, Region 1, Existing Nuclear (Dungeness B, Hinkley Point B & Hunterston B)
Appointed chief nuclear officer, region 1 in June 2009, Brian was previously station director of Torness power station. He joined the electricity industry in 1977 at Longannet power station, moving into nuclear power in 1985 during commissioning of Torness. Transferring to Hunterston power station in 1988, Brian worked on both Hunterston A and B sites becoming Hunterston B operations manager in 2001 and station director in 2004. Before moving to Torness in 2006, Brian took on a new role establishing the company central outage organisation. Brian is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and holds a first class honours degree.
Matt Sykes Chief Nuclear Officer, Region 2, Existing Nuclear (Hartlepool, Heysham 1 and New build technical)
Appointed as chief nuclear officer, region 2 in November 2006, having previously acted as head of operations (west) since July 2005. Matt joined British Energy’s Hartlepool power station in 1987, having worked in a variety of roles at conventional plants. He assisted with the commissioning of Sizewell B power station, before being appointed as station director in 2003. He holds a masters degree.
Peter Prozesky Chief Nuclear Officer, Region 3, Existing Nuclear (Sizewell B, Heysham 2 and Torness)
Appointed as chief nuclear officer, region 3 in November 2006, having joined British Energy in July 2005 as head of operations (east). Peter acted as head of outage & supply chain from May 2006. He previously served as acting general manager of the nuclear generation business for Eskom, one of the largest integrated electricity generation and supply companies in the world. In 1996 Peter was appointed as station director of Koeberg power station in South Africa. He has been working in various line positions in the nuclear power industry since 1978 and is a former chairman of the International Participants Advisory Committee of the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). He was awarded the WANO 2005 Nuclear Excellence Award.
Stuart Crooks Chief Technical Officer, Existing Nuclear
Appointed Chief Technical Officer on 10 July 2009. Stuart has worked at British Energy since 1986 and has held many of the senior management posts on three different designs of AGR, lastly as Station Director of Hartlepool power station. Most recently Stuart has been responsible for Internal Regulation, AGR Design Authority, Quality Assurance, Environment, Fuel Cycle and Nuclear Liabilities as the Safety and Technical Director. Stuart is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and holds a BSc in Applied Physics and an MBA.
Thomas Kusterer Chief Financial Officer, EDF Energy, London
Thomas joined EDF Energy in April 2009 as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining EDF Energy, Thomas was Senior Vice President Finance, EnBW in Germany. He started his career in auditing with KPMG in Berlin and New York before joining KPMG Corporate Finance in Stuttgart focusing on Utilities, Automotive and Pharmaceutical Industries. Thomas has an MBA in Industrial Economics from Mannheim University and he is a qualified Chartered Accountant in Germany and also qualified as a Certified Public Accountant in the US.

Rob Guyler Finance Director, Existing Nuclear
Has been with British Energy for 10 years. A Chartered Accountant, having qualified with Coca Cola Schweppes and Mars Confectionery, Rob spent several years in Management Consultancy with PricewaterhouseCoopers before joining British Energy in the Business Development Group. Over the past 10 years Rob has undertaken a number of finance management roles, more recently as CFO (Nuclear) and currently Finance Director, Existing Nuclear. Rob has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Business Studies.
David Barber Head of Safety and Regulation, Existing Nuclear
David joined the electricity supply industry in 1976 and has extensive experience in nuclear power operations and maintenance. In 2000 he became Station Director at Heysham 1 before moving into a fleet role in 2004 as Head of Engineering. David became Head of Technical Training in 2007, responsible for the long term technical skill capability and strategy and in January 2010 was appointed Head of Safety and Regulation Division. David is a Chartered Engineer and holds a first class honours degree in Energy Technology.
Jeremy has 35 years experience in the electricity industry. He worked as part of CEGB consent team for Sizewell B assisting leading counsel (David Silsoe QC) on safety and emergency planning areas (1981-1985). He was CEGB safety witness at Hinkley C Inquiry (1987-1989) and led the Planning Project Team for Sizewell C application (1992-1994). He has been British Energy Director Health, Safety & Environment (1996-2004), Environment and Nuclear Liabilities Director (2004-2008) and Safety & Technical Director (2008-2009). He is currently acting as senior advisor to both the Managing Director, New Nuclear Build, and the Managing Director, Existing Nuclear, in EDF Energy.
David Akers Human Resources Director, Existing Nuclear
David joined British Energy in 2006 as HR Business Partner for Generation. David has over 20 years HR Management experience working with large operational businesses, including ICI, DuPont, Cargill and more recently as Head of HR with Severn Trent Water. As HR Director for Existing Nuclear, David is responsible for developing and delivering the people strategy and plans, working closely with key stakeholders.
Joined Scottish Nuclear Limited in 1991 on the privatisation of the Scottish Electricity Industry and became Company Secretary, before being appointed Head of Legal Services in August 1995 to the soon to be privatised British Energy. Jean is particularly interested in nuclear-related legal issues and is a member of the UK delegation to the Nuclear Law Committee of the OECD/Nuclear Energy Agency. Jean is also Co-Chair of the NIA's Legal Affairs Working Group.
Goulven Graillat Nuclear Senior Advisor & Group Nuclear Synergies Officer
Graduated from Ecole Centrale de Paris in 1977. He joined EDF in 1979, as Research Engineer in Thermal-hydraulics on nuclear reactors. In 1984, he joined EDF’s Nuclear Engineering Division within which he held various technical positions and has managed the commissioning of two 1300 MW nuclear power plants in Cattenom. In 1993 he joined EDF’s Nuclear Operation Division as Outage and Technical Director of Gravelines nuclear site. He was appointed as nuclear adviser of EDF’s CEO in 1996 and as Station Director of Dampierre nuclear site in 1998. Since 2003, he has held the position of Head of Economics and Strategy Department within EDF Generation Branch, and most recently was appointed Nuclear Senior Advisor and Group Nuclear Synergies Officer.
Humphrey studied Engineering and Management at Manchester University and held appointments with management consultants and accountants KPMG before joining Seeboard in 1991. He became Chief Accountant in 1994 and Group Financial Controller in 1996 before being appointed to a newly created Executive Director position in May 2000. Following Seeboard’s acquisition by LE Group in 2002, he was appointed Strategy and Development Director. Following the change to EDF Energy, he was appointed Chief Financial Officer and Deputy CEO. He was appointed Managing Director, Nuclear New Build in 2009.
Tony has a bachelors degree in environmental biology and a masters degree in ecology. He spent his early career working in nature conservation for a range of NGOs, national and local government organisations, including the Nature Conservancy Council, the forerunners of Natural England. Tony joined Nuclear Electric in 1990 as the company's Terrestrial Ecologist, becoming environment group head in 1993. In 2000 he moved into the field of radioactive waste management and decommissioning, managing the first HSE Quinquennial review of British Energy's decommissioning arrangements. Tony played a major role in the negotiations surrounding the restructuring of British Energy's nuclear liabilities in 2002-2005. He became nuclear liabilities manager in 2004, responsible for delivering British Energy's commitments under the liabilities restructuring agreements to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Tony was appointed acting head of environment and nuclear liabilities in May 2008.
Alain Peckre Continuous Improvement & Operational Support Director
Joined the nuclear industry in 1978 after graduating from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et d'Aérotechnique (School of Engineering), in Poitiers, France. He worked in various operations positions before becoming Head of Operations at Paluel nuclear power station, France, in 1983, followed by Head of Safety-Quality Taskforce at Chooz B nuclear power station in 1989. This led Alain to the role of Head of Safety, Security and Fire Prevention at Daya Bay site in China in 1992. He returned to France to take up various Plant Manager and Station Director positions, most recently Station Director at Penly and then Tricastin nuclear power stations. In September 2009 he was appointed Continuous Improvement & Operational Support Director. Alain holds a masters degree. |
